Η ταινία, βασισμένη σε ένα έργο του Amara Lakhous, αφηγείται την ιστορία μίας ομάδας ανθρώπων. Διαδραματίζεται στη Ρώμη, στην Piazza Vittorio, όχι μακριά από το Σταθμό Termini, που φιλοξενούσε μία αγορά και σήμερα φιλοξενεί πολλούς μετανάστες από τη Μέση Ανατολή και την Κίνα. Ανάμεσά τους πολλοί Ιταλοί με τους απαρχαιωμένους ή μη σεβαστούς κανόνες τους, που φαίνονται εκτός τόπου, αμήχανοι. Ζούνε όλοι σε μία παλιά πολυκατοικία (Ιρανοί, Άραβες, Αφρικανοί, Αλγερινοί, ντόπιοι, λαθρομετανάστες) και διαπληκτίζονται: για τη χρήση του ανελκυστήρα, για το σκύλο που γαβγίζει συνεχώς, γιατί έχουν νεύρα λόγω ζέστης, καθότι καλοκαίρι, γιατί πρέπει να παρουσιάζονται συνεχώς στο αστυνομικό τμήμα. Roma. La Piazza Vittorio del titolo si trova al centro dell’Esquilino, storico quartiere romano, residenza borghese della burocrazia di fine Ottocento. Circondato dalla Roma più turistica e mondana, la sua vicinanza alla stazione centrale ne ha fatto negli anni, come in tutte le metropoli del mondo, un variegato luogo di approdo e stratificazione etnica e culturale. In un suo vecchio palazzo umbertino si snodano le vicende di un eterogeneo gruppo di inquilini, una piccola “folla multietnica” segnata da forti differenze culturali, di provenienza, di religione, di modi di intendere la vita. Nell’ambiente chiuso del palazzo e del condominio si consuma lo “scontro di civiltà” in cui tali differenze emergono prepotentemente nel quotidiano e diventano malintesi, piccole prevaricazioni, diffidenze. Le storie dei personaggi seguono i propri percorsi, incrociandosi l’un l’altra in ragione di una condivisione forzata dello spazio, del quartiere, del palazzo e del suo ascensore, puntualmente all’origine di tante dispute condominiali. Ognuno di questi personaggi esprime la sua solitudine, il suo male di vivere, offrendo uno spaccato, un sunto della sua esperienza di vita, le sue riflessioni e i suoi sentimenti in una prospettiva sociale.

 

Rome. Piazza Vittorio is a square in the centre of the Esquilino, an ancient district in Rome where the bourgeois bureaucrats used to live in the late nineteenth Century. Surrounded by more touristic spots and the heart of the city’s social life, the area is near the central station, which makes it, as it often happens in other metropolitan cities in the world, a multifaceted mix of various ethnic and cultural groups of people. A very old building of the late 19th Century sees the stories of a very diverse group of residents unfold within its walls: it’s a small “multi-ethnical crowd”, with strong differences in culture, origin and religion, and very different ideas on life. In the limited space of the building, a true clash of civilizations takes place, as those differences start to pervade daily life and turn into misunderstanding, abuse of power, distrust. The stories of the single characters unfold and cross each other within the restricted spaces of the neighbourhood, the building, and the elevator, at the centre of many disputes between residents. The loneliness, the pain of living expressed by each of these characters offers an insight on their life experiences, their thoughts and their feelings in a social perspective.
